To properly explore the Tuscan region of Italy, we decided to stay in centrally-located Lucca and use it as our “home base” for the next 6 days. Plus, it would give us a chance to unpack our things and do short excursions to all of the areas we wanted to see.
Our drive from Milan to Lucca took approximately 3 hours of mostly Italian autostrada, or interstate highway driving. Italy’s highways operate on a “pay to drive” system, where your toll is based upon how far you drive. It was amazing to see fully staffed toll booths at each and every off-ramp (in both directions) to collect tolls from vehicles using the highway. And the toll is not cheap (probably due to having to build and staff all those toll booths!
Jo Ann arranged to rent us a 2-bedroom villa, secluded in the hills over Lucca. It included a large outdoor terrace where we could enjoy our meals overlooking the beautiful scenery and a fireplace to ward off the evening chill.
And there was a church tower next door where the church bells gently signaled the current hour, even throughout the night. It became very calming for us to hear the bells ring in the background and it added to that feeling of being on vacation!
After arrival and some unpacking, we headed out for dinner at a local family restaurant in town. And although all of the food we ordered was wonderful, Jo’s lightly breaded and deep fried rabbit and vegetables was probably the best.
Tomorrow will be an excursion to the town of Lucca, but I am starting to feel a cold coming on…
Hi everyone!
As most of you know, Ray has accepted a 2-year assignment with Toyota's European Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. For those of you who do not know, Belgium is located next to France, Germany and the Netherlands. The home of NATO and the European Union, it is considered the "gateway to Europe" with its easy access to many European countries. (Hint, hint--good excuse to come and visit!)
Ray started his new position in February, 2008. The girls and I arrived here in late March. We are living just outside the city of Brussels in the commune of Tervuren, Belgium.
Although we are sad to temporarily leave our family and friends, we are excited for this adventure. What an opportunity to leave our tiny box and experience life outside of America!
